Question - Best lubrication for fan | Tom's Hardware Forum

News Nvidia and Microsoft tease "a new era of PC" ahead of Computex 2026 — coordinated social media posts could indicate that rumored N1X laptops will... But a drop of motor oil could work as well or even better if the tolerances are loose and you need to reduce play. As said, these plastic fans if they need lubrication they are mostly toast and will go bad soon and attract dust if you add lube (and might even gather dust in the motor and add resistances and burn the motor coils due to high effort and slow spinning). I wouldn't bother with lubricating the fan bearings that are meant for a PC. They should come with necessary lubrication from the factory, hence why I said, I wouldn't bother.

Computer fans typically use sealed fluid dynamic bearings, so it's not possible to lubricate them anyway. You'd just be oiling the windings and magnet, creating a big mess and a dust trap. It also occasionally happens when the computer is running, but very rarely. Interestingly, it does not seem to happen when the processor is being used heavily. The laptop does not have a discrete graphics card. The fan is clean. I'm not sure if the laptop is under warranty, but I trust my own skills much more than I trust the manufacturer (or the shipper). Before I search for a matching fan and replace it, I thought I would see if it is safe to try any lubricants. By far my favorite upgrade to my computer in the last 10 years. Sorry about the fan though. I actually have the same problem but already have an SSD, so I know it's not the drive :) ... I have to disagree with this. I have repaired a handful of laptop fans with lubricant. One tried and true lubricant is sewing machine oil. Sewing machine oil is designed to work well with parts that move at high speeds, which is exactly what your computer fans are.

My question is (mainly curious) if pure mineral oil (some also call it liquid paraffin, usually sold in pharmacies and used on the skin to moisturize it) are also good for lubricating very small bushings such as those in pc fans. I have heard that pure mineral oil is recommended for sewing machines and razors/clippers because it is clean, has no detergent additives and does not get sticky, but what about the lack of anti-wear additive? The goal is to prevent bearing wear as much as possible with a lubricant that forms a strong and durable film.
