It's tough – but is it good enough? With people increasingly happy to rely on their smartphone for everyday snaps these days, if you see a point-and-shoot compact at all it’s likely to be one of two things: an instant camera that outputs Polaroid-style prints, or, as with the new Olympus TG-6, a toughened camera that you’d dare to use in scenarios where you wouldn’t otherwise risk your handset. The Olympus Tough TG-6 is a well-designed rugged camera with a broad feature set, good image quality for its class and a host of environment sensors that store everything from location to temperature in your photos. The Olympus Tough TG-6 is the company’s sixth-generation premium underwater camera. Just choose the ‘fish’ spot on the mode dial, where you’ll find five choices that match the situation you’re in. It is a shame that Olympus did not create a simplified version of its menu system for more novice users, who are likely to be overwhelmed by the options and organization.

Year after year, model after model, Olympus has bested all other competition with its flagship waterproof TG series. Its latest entry, the TG-6 ($449), doesn't break far from the established confines of the series. It's a pocketable camera with a lens that's makes it a decent low-light option, and a waterproof design rated to fifty feet. There's an accessory ring around the lens. Olympus sells a couple of fish-eye lenses, if you want to get a wider angle of view, as well as a pair of flash accessories that redirect light to surround the lens, filling in shadows in close-up shots. The On/Off button is on top, along with the shutter release, zoom control, and a control wheel. The control wheel isn't comfortable—it's very slim, and it has to be waterproof, so sealing makes turning it require some effort. Olympus has added plastic ridges, so you can get a grip and turn it, but they are a little pointy. I see this is as a bad thing. It's easy enough to go into your iPhone notifications and turn them off—and I recommend you do so if buy a TG-6. But it shouldn't be an issue in the first place—Olympus should know better than to turn a utility app into an advertising platform.
