Plenty of features packed into a solidly constructed body with plenty of format support, the P3 should appeal to many who want a little more from their MP3 player It's a shame that the menus aren't quite as interesting as you might want them to be until you make a few select presses. You can navigate by the usual artist, album, genre and so on, but the P3 also supports cover art so you can opt for a cover view meaning you can swipe through your albums with your finger and find the one you want. A subway map application is useful, and provides some notable landmarks with brief descriptions, ideal for those long evenings in foreign cities at boring conferences. On a hardware front you have Bluetooth included, meaning that you can connect to a Bluetooth headset, or use the P3 as a handsfree speakerphone with your mobile, or transfer files. Samsung's premise with the P3 was to create a player for the "most demanding consumers". In some senses that's what the P3 is. It is certainly well constructed and the interface is, for the most part, a pleasure to use. We like the customisability too and there are plenty of features packed into the player.

The Samsung YP-P3 ($149 for 8GB) builds upon the success of theSamsung YP-P2, which was a very solid portable media player that delivered excellent audio, a responsive touchscreen, and stereo Bluetooth connectivity (for placing and taking calls with a Bluetooth-enabled phone) to push the device past the "iPod touch wannabe" status. The device supports a wide range of popular and not-so-popular audio formats (AAC, ASF, Ogg FLAC, MP3, WAV, protected and unprotected WMA), and features an FM radio with 30 presets whose audio alternated between clear and static-filled, depending on the station. You can also record FM radio content, or your voice with the built-in mic. EmoDio desktop software, which comes preloaded on the P3, allows you to manage your media by creating playlists, subscribing to podcasts, burning content to optical media, and transferring content to the player. EmoDio also lets you convert TXT files to MP3 for audio playback. When we typed a short paragraph, converted it to audio, and transferred it to the P3, the player read it back with the expected mechanical cadence, but managed to accurately sound off every word but one (which was a name, Horatio). Despite the hard, uncomfortable stock earbuds (fortunately, you can use your own set of standard headphones), it was a joy listening to music on the P3. Samung's proprietary DNSe 3.0 sound-enhancing technology (with 12 audio settings) that brought a fresh vibrancy to our Radiohead MP3s.

It's been just a month since we first saw Samsung's sexy YP-P3 player, but already it's available for £20 less than the official price of £130. Video is also impressive, thanks to the large 16:9 screen, which offers vibrant, sharp pictures with good motion and decent detail. Indeed, if regular movie watching is your priority, this is probably the player to get, but if music takes precedence there are better options.
