But the most curious device I saw was a phone for your pets, aptly named the PetPhone. The PetPhone made its debut in September 2025, but MWC was the first time many of us heard of it. It’s essentially a cellular tracker that attaches to your pet’s collar. Unlike an AirTag, which relies on someone with an iPhone to be nearby to track it and could be dangerous for pets, the PetPhone uses GPS and cell signal to show you exactly where your cat or dog is. The PetPhone is on sale now for $90 at Amazon, Chewy and other retailers. The phone requires a service subscription for one to three years. The three-year plan averages $5 a month and the first month is free. The PetCam doesn’t have a price yet.

The problem is that the device frequently mistakes ordinary movements for the three jumps. Clover’s long, tasseled ears collect leaves, grass, and assorted debris on walks, and she scratches them out semiregularly. So every time she scratched herself, another message arrived. By midafternoon, my phone was buzzing incessantly. The PetPhone’s vision rests on the notion that dogs are currently excluded from the digital world and need technological tools to express themselves. My daughter is a Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Clover, and for the past couple of months, she’s had clipped to her collar an A.I. communication device known as the PetPhone. Unveiled earlier this year at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona by the Singapore-based connectivity company uCloudlink, the PetPhone has been heralded as the world’s first smartphone for pets. Americans now spend tens of billions of dollars a year on their animals, and in a country where raising children has become prohibitively expensive, many people lavish their pets instead. ... The device, which is about the size of a tube of lip balm and costs $90, is sold primarily through the pet supply website Chewy and connects to the owner’s smartphone through uCloudlink’s GlocalMe app. In practical terms, it combines a GPS tracker, a health monitor, a speaker, a microphone, and a collection of A.I.-powered features that are supposed to let owners track pets’ location and monitor their activity. “Call me. I’m waiting,” is written on the packaging, which sounds suspiciously like something you might find written in Sharpie on a bathroom stall.

But what if your dog/cat wants to call you? That takes a little more legwork on your end (if you're a dog owner), as you'll need to train your pup to do a specific action to initiate a call: jumping up and down three times in a row within six seconds. For cats, placing a call is a little simpler. Felines simply need to jump from the floor onto a surface roughly three feet or taller to phone their favorite human friend. Similar to other pet trackers, you can set up a geofenced location and receive notifications if/when your pet leaves said area. The PetPhone is also an activity monitor, logging how much time your pets spend on the move, whether going for a walk, playing, or roaming. Lastly, there's a community aspect to the PetPhone that allows your pet to befriend other PetPhone-rocking cats and dogs, with permission from both owners. Doing so unlocks two-way communication from dog-to-dog or cat-to-cat, as well as alerts for when friends are nearby. For millions of pet households still stuck watching through a one-way camera, that’s a meaningful shift in what a collar can do. ... Yes. The pet tech market keeps growing, and the vast majority of devices still do one thing: track location. What matters is that your dog or cat hears a familiar voice in real time, not a recording. You can also send pre-recorded messages or stream calming music through the same speaker, a thoughtful touch for pets that respond to sound more than words. The whole unit carries an IP67 waterproof rating, so rain, puddles, and the occasional enthusiastic swim won’t kill it. Magnetic charging keeps the port sealed and free of debris.
