In 2026, the IBM POWER8 market has transitioned into a "legacy value" phase. While the platform reached peak adoption years ago, it remains a critical component for budget-conscious enterprises and "laggard" adopters who prioritize cost over the performance peaks of Power10 and the emerging Power11 ItjungleAs400Software.

Key Market Trends & Insights (2026)

* Sunset of Support: Official IBM support for major POWER8 models (S814, S822, S824) largely concluded in 2024 Maxava. By 2026, users staying on these systems face steep IBM maintenance surcharges (up to 2.5x standard rates), driving a massive shift toward Third-Party Maintenance (TPM) providers to sustain operations Pcserverandparts.

* Operating System Ceiling: POWER8 hardware is restricted to IBM i 7.4, with no support for 7.5 or later versions Maxava. This creates a fixed security and innovation deadline for enterprises, pushing strategic migrations toward the secondary Power9 or new Power10 markets.

* Secondary Market Boom: The secondary market is currently saturated with POWER8 units as early Power10 adopters complete their three-year refresh cycles. Refurbished units are typically priced 40–70% lower than new enterprise hardware, which has seen price spikes in 2026 due to AI-driven memory (DRAM) costs Pcserverandparts.

* Adoption Landscape: Power10 is projected to hit 30% market share by the end of 2026, while Power11 is gaining early traction Itjungle. POWER8 continues to serve a niche in Partner Power Clouds, where providers leverage older hardware to offer highly competitive, low-cost hosting Pcserverandparts.

State Of The Power Systems Base 2025: The Systems - IT Jungle

www.itjungle.com

We do not think for a second that more than half of the actual machines running IBM i are Power10 and that more than half of the machines have Power9 machines, which the raw data from the latest Forta survey suggests. We do think that Power9 installations are growing, some with new iron in the reseller channel and others with second-hand gear that is taken out as companies move to Power10 machinery. We do believe that Power8 machinery peaked about two years ago and that Power7/Power7+ machinery peaked six years ago. If history is any guide, the Power10 iron will comprise about 20 percent of the installed base as 2025 comes to a close, even with the Power11 machines coming later this year, and will rise to be about 30 percent by the end of 2026 and maybe hit 40 percent by the end of 2028. Here is our model data for Power Systems machine counts at the 120,000 sites using IBM i worldwide, with a total of just under 285,000 machine in the field. We think that Power11 will have a tiny uptake this year, considerably more in 2026, and quite a bit in 2027 and 2028 because history is indeed a strong guide when it comes to the Power Systems and IBM i markets. Enterprise Server Market - Share, Trends & Analysis

www.mordorintelligence.com

The enterprise server market size is projected to be USD 95.02 billion in 2025, USD 101.38 billion in 2026, and reach USD 140.55 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 6.75% from 2026 to 2031. Intensifying demand for AI-accelerated workloads, the return of latency-sensitive applications from public clouds, and rapid edge-computing rollouts are reshaping vendor roadmaps. NVIDIA H100 and H200 lead times averaged 26 weeks for tier-2 customers in early 2025, delaying USD 3.2 billion in server revenue and trimming unit shipments 4-6% relative to unconstrained demand. The chokepoint sat in TSMC’s advanced packaging for CoWoS and HBM3 memory despite a 40% capacity uplift. Similar tightness afflicted 800 gigabit silicon-photonics transceivers as Broadcom and Marvell struggled to scale co-packaged optics. Buyers with long-term allocation enjoyed list pricing while spot purchasers paid 20-35% premiums. Intel’s Gaudi 3 promised relief in 2026 yet required non-CUDA software stacks, limiting near-term substitution. By server class, volume servers captured 41.94% of the enterprise server market in 2025, and high-end servers are advancing at a 6.81% CAGR over 2026-2031, the fastest class-level growth. Note: Market size and forecast figures in this report are generated using Mordor Intelligence’s proprietary estimation framework, updated with the latest available data and insights as of 2026.
