I just got through an evening with the Q1 speakers. I like these speakers better than My B&W CDM1NT, and any other small speaker I have ever had, expept perhaps the Celestion SL 600. Right out of the box, the Q1's are a good speaker, even non bi wired, or non bi amped,I still prefer them overall to most any small speaker. But in voicing a small speaker, certain compromises have to be made, and KEF opted for some tweeter decrease to offset the lack of true bass.

That’s what KEF’s Uni-Q driver technology does in your living room, and the Q1s make it accessible without requiring you to sell a kidney. These compact bookshelf speakers punch way above their weight class, and after three months with them, I’m still discovering details in tracks I’ve heard a thousand times. The Q1s arrive in typical KEF fashion—no-nonsense packaging that prioritizes protection over Instagram-worthy unboxing theatrics. Inside, you get two surprisingly dense speakers that immediately feel more premium than their price suggests. Donald Fagen’s vocals, Wayne Shorter’s saxophone, and that complex percussion section each occupy their own distinct space. The imaging is almost holographic—close your eyes and you can point to where each instrument sits in the mix. I’ve heard speakers three times the price that don’t image this precisely. The soundstage width is impressive for 12-inch boxes. On Radiohead’s “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi,” those layered guitars stretch well beyond the physical speaker cabinets. The depth is good too, though not quite as exceptional as the width. Where the Q150s truly shine is vertical dispersion—you can stand up, sit down, even lay on the floor (don’t judge my listening habits), and the tonal balance stays remarkably consistent.

In addition to the characteristic features of each Audiovector's products, the performance of reviewed speakers is defined by two things. The first one is a tweeter. Each time we are dealing with a ribbon transducer, AMT driver or any electrostatic or magnetostatic tweeter, we can always expect an open, spatial and detailed high frequencies. He is responsible for most of the solutions Audiovector uses in its speakers, including five foundations of corporate technology - ADC (Active Direct Concept), IUC (Individual Upgrade Concept), LCC (Low Compression Concept), SEC (Soundstage Enhancement Concept) and NES (No Energy Storage). In conjunction with other features, they have one job - to make the sound faster, more direct and more dynamic. Audiovector's products are easy to recognize because of the curved side walls, metal panels with drivers and various, sometimes very bold, finishing versions. Now we have a chance to see what's what since we received one of the freshly assembled, still warm QR1 monitor speakers in walnut veneer which was also introduced as a novelty. Small but effective and well-built. The large aluminium back panel means there is an active version coming. Looking at the first pictures and descriptions of this new product, it was hard to imagine a better combination of existing Audiovector's solutions with new ideas which make the speakers more interesting, better, and by the way - cheaper. Or maybe the introduction of further improvements in these sets didn't bring the expected results and that is why the company decided to introduce QR1 and QR3 as complete, finished products. By the way, I'm curious what we'll see in this series in the future. So far, the compact monitor speakers and medium-sized floorstanders are probably the best possible solution, but who knows - maybe soon Audiovector will also introduce a larger floorstanders, a center speaker or a subwoofer?

Last weekend I traveled to Berkeley, CA, and spent three solid days listening to Magico’s latest aluminum-enclosed speaker, the $25k stand-mounted Q1 mini-monitor. To be honest, though I’d been invited to audition the Q1s several months before, this was a trip I’d decided not to make. Up until very recently there was simply nothing in a dynamic speaker that could match the transparency, disappearing act, and, with a first-rate source, realism (at least on acoustic music) of a really good electrostat or planar—nothing with multiple cones that could compare to the seamless presentation of a “boxless” Quad or CLX or Sound Lab or Maggie, or equal their transient speed and low-level resolution. True, as I’ve noted before, big multiway cone speakers own the bottom octaves and impact on the loud side of the dynamic spectrum; they also have more three-dimensional “body” than ’stats and, sometimes, tighter image focus and wider soundstages. Because they only have two drivers, a (relatively) simple crossover, and tiny enclosures with much less surface area to reflect/diffract off (and much less mass to resonate), minis, as noted, tend to disappear into the soundfield more completely than any other kind of speaker, including ’stats and planars.
