Quanum Nova Drone
Overview
Product sourcing insights & recommendations
The Quanum Nova, also known as the Cheerson CX-20 Auto-Pathfinder, is a legacy 350-size quadcopter that gained popularity as an affordable, open-source aerial platform Erau. Built on the APM 2.52 flight controller, it was designed for hobbyists and researchers seeking autonomous features like GPS Loiter and Return-to-Launch at a low price point (~$250–$320 at peak) ErauPlos.
Product Insights
- Hardware Architecture: Utilizes an 8-bit ArduPilotMega (APM) board, making it compatible with legacy Mission Planner software for waypoint programming Erau.
- Key Limitations: The platform suffers from significant motor vibrations, often requiring DIY dampening solutions (like sponges) to stabilize camera footage PlosResearchgate. It is also known for reliability issues, specifically "fly-aways" caused by compass interference Ireviews.
- Legacy Status: As of 2026, the 8-bit APM hardware is considered obsolete, as modern ArduCopter firmware now requires 32-bit processors like the STM32 found in Pixhawk systems Erau.
Market Trends & Alternatives
- Discontinuation: The Quanum Nova and CX-20 are no longer in active production. Current market availability is limited to second-hand units or spare parts Erau.
- Shift to Pixhawk: The market has moved toward more powerful 32-bit systems. Direct DIY successors include the Holybro S500 V2 and Readytosky Totem Q450, which offer superior stability and modern GNSS support Erau.
- Competitive Landscape: While the Quanum Nova was once a budget alternative to the DJI Phantom, the modern market is dominated by highly integrated DJI platforms and long-range FPV drones running iNav Erau.
I have compiled lists of currently available quadcopter drones and GPS-enabled components that serve as modern alternatives to the Quanum Nova. Detailed pricing and supplier information can be found in the files below.
