Product Warranty · Home News What is Ram Packing for Expansion Joints? Piping systems operate under some level of pressure, temperature and movement. The combination of these three characteristics will drive the type of expansion joint most suitable for your application. Common packing materials include graphite and carbon fiber. Slip-type expansion joints also include a component known as a “ram plunger”. The ram plunger is located on the outside of the expansion joint, and can be screwed in, tightening over the packing material. Constant movement of a slip-type joint can eventually wear-out and damage packing materials, resulting in a less-effective seal. However, the ram plunger can be removed, unscrewing it from the top. From there, more packing material can be added, refreshing worn out packing and facilitating a tighter seal, preventing leakage and blowback from steam. For a slip-type expansion joint capable of managing high pressure, ADSCO offers the “RJ” Ram-Pak Slip-Type Expansion Joint. These joints feature a graphite-based packing material and include shut-off valves that allow extra packing to be added without the risk of blowback, even at high pressures.
