Roku also added the "Featured Free" section as the top section of its main menu from which users can get access to direct streaming of shows and movies from its partners. According to The Verge in July 2024, a Roku OS update in June 2024 had "ruined" the Roku TV experience. This update added "motion smoothing", and was reportedly irreversible. This followed another identical issue reported in 2020 for Roku TVs made by TCL. In August 2024, a Wired review noted that ease of use was one of the main reasons to buy any Roku product. In September 2018, Roku introduced the seventh generation of products. Carrying over from the 2017 sixth-generation without any changes were the Express (3900), Express+ (3910), Streaming Stick (3800), and Streaming Stick+ (3810). The Ultra is the same hardware device from 2017, but it comes with JBL premium headphones and is repackaged with the new model number 4661. It lacks 4K and HDR10 support, making its features similar to those of the 2019 Roku Express (3930). It has the same form factor as the 2019 Roku Express, except the plastic shell is white rather than black. On April 23, 2025, Roku introduced the eleventh generation of products. Netflix support was initially dependent on a PC, requiring users to add content to their "Instant Queue" from the service's web interface before it could be accessed via Roku. In May 2010, the channel was updated to allow users to search the Netflix library directly from the device.

Roku TV OS uses WiFi Direct to connect your Roku TV or streaming player to other devices such as the Roku remote or your android phone or iOS device. WiFi direct is a WiFi standard that enables devices to connect and communicate with each other without a central gateway such as an access point or router. For first-time Roku users, you’ll occasionally see a WiFi SSID or name associated with your Roku device in the form of DIRECT-Roku-XXXX, the XXX being some alphanumerical string like in my case “012-5FAA2B”. ... This is actually a private password-protected Access Point(AP) that your Roku TV creates for other devices to connect to and talk to your Roku TV. Pairing devices such as Roku enhanced remote and Roku speaker. Mirroring what’s on your smartphone, tablet, PC via “screen mirroring”. Using your TV at hotel or college dorm. Under these use-cases, it’s wise that you leave Device connect enabled which is also the default behavior. Note that the Roku mobile app doesn’t use this WiFi to work. Instead through your phone it connect to the TV/streaming device through the shared WiFi network created by your router. ... r/Roku on Reddit: Direct-Roku wifi default password?

Switched ISP and of course the kids lost the remote long ago. I hooked up the old isp router, but for some reason the TV does not connect to it. If I disconnect however, an SSID appears ' Direct -roku-139-82989e. Acquire a new Wifi remote from Roku and pair it to your device (this assumes your device supports Wifi remotes - almost all of the remotes with voice input or headphones, plus the stick remotes are all Wifi with the exception of the original headphone remote, which was bluetooth) ... There is no "default password" for the Direct-roku network - it's the Wifi Direct protocol network for the Wifi remote and doesn't have any kind of predictable password associated with it. You would need to configure your Wifi router with the same SSID and password as before you swapped ISP's, and then you would connect your phone running the Roku mobile app to that SSID and use it to move the Roku to the new SSID. Still mind boggling that the design of the tv is such that if certain conditions are met, you can't use it. Couldn't be hard to include buttons on the tv to navigate the menu. ... Yeah, the TV manufacturers control how many buttons are on the panel and what those buttons do. The trend appears to be migrating to one single button on the panel, which doesn't really leave you much choice in how to navigate even the simple Roku menus (not that the older TV's with more buttons worked particularly well either).
