RX 490 Guide: What It Is & Best Modern AMD GPU Alternatives

The phrase "RX 490" refers to a rumored, "ghost" graphics card that never reached the retail market. While it appeared in official AMD leaks around 2016–2017 Reddit Techpowerup, the company eventually pivoted to the Vega architecture, leaving the "490" designation as a historical footnote.

In the current 2026 market, the high-end GPU landscape is defined by extreme volatility. Flagship cards are being diverted for AI workloads, leading to street prices reaching as high as $9,000 for high-end competitors Techradar. AMD has shifted focus toward the Radeon RX 9000 series, specifically the RX 9070 XT, to meet mid-to-high-end demand amid a projected 10% price hike due to global memory shortages Resetera.

For sourcing, buyers should look toward modern high-end equivalents such as the RX 7900 XT or the newly released RX 9070 XT, while being cautious of "RX 490" labels used for mislabeled or refurbished hardware. The comprehensive report below provides a deep dive into these trends, historical context, and B2B sourcing recommendations.
