The phrase 'sas 3gb' refers to the first generation of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS-1) interface technology. It is currently categorized as legacy hardware, having been largely superseded by 6Gb/s (SAS-2), 12Gb/s (SAS-3), and the emerging 24Gb/s (SAS-4) standards Alibaba.

Technical Specifications & Insights

* Performance: Delivers a maximum data transfer rate of 3.0 Gbit/s (approx. 300 MB/s) per lane Seagate Alibaba.

* Compatibility: Native physical and protocol compatibility with SATA-2 (3Gb/s). SAS backplanes can accept SATA drives, but SAS drives cannot be used in standard SATA controllers due to a physical connector "key" Seagate.

* Enterprise Features: Despite its age, it supports advanced SCSI features like 128-deep command queuing and dual-porting for redundant data paths, which are critical for server uptime Seagate.

Market Trends & Sourcing Context

* Legacy Reliance: The market for SAS 3Gb/s is now restricted to replacement parts and maintenance for aging server infrastructure (e.g., HP ProLiant Gen5/Gen6 or older Dell PowerEdge systems).

* Refurbished Dominance: Most 3Gb/s products available today are refurbished or used. New old-stock (NOS) units exist but are increasingly rare Alibaba Alibaba.

* Pricing: RAID controller cards for this generation (like the LSI SAS 3081E-R) are highly affordable, often priced between $12–$25 in the B2B market Alibaba Alibaba.

* Transition Point: For any performance-sensitive application, the current market standard is 12Gb/s (SAS-3). Sourcing 3Gb/s is only recommended for low-cost bulk storage where interface bottlenecks are acceptable Alibaba.

I have compiled a shortlist of legacy SAS 3Gb/s drives and RAID controllers currently available for maintenance and replacement purposes.
