Seagate Oem
Overview
Product sourcing insights & recommendations
The phrase 'Seagate OEM' refers to Seagate hard drives originally sold to Original Equipment Manufacturers (e.g., Dell, HP, Lenovo) for integration into pre-built systems. In the current 2026 market, these drives are a focal point for buyers due to their lower cost compared to retail versions, despite significant differences in warranty and support.
Product Definition & Differences Seagate
* Warranty: The most critical distinction is that OEM drives do not have a Seagate warranty. All warranty claims must be handled by the original system manufacturer (the OEM).
* Packaging: Sold as "bare drives" in anti-static bags rather than retail boxes, which reduces shipping costs and environmental waste.
* Specifications: Mechanically identical to their retail counterparts (e.g., Seagate Exos), often featuring Enterprise-grade CMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording) or advanced HAMR technology.
Market Trends & Insights (2026)
* AI-Driven Demand Surge: The 2026 market is experiencing a "storage supercycle" driven by AI data centers. Large cloud customers have fully booked nearline HDD capacity through 2026, leading to potential supply tightness for secondary market OEM drives. BlocksandfilesTrendforce
* Shift to High Density: Hyperscalers are prioritizing 30TB+ drives (such as the Mozaic 3+ platform) to save on rack space and cooling, making older 16TB–20TB OEM drives more accessible in the secondary/refurbished market. ForbesFinancialcontent
* Price Dynamics: While retail prices remain firm due to enterprise demand, OEM drives continue to offer a 20-40% discount, making them popular for NAS users and budget-conscious data centers.
B2B Market Availability
High-capacity drives matching Seagate's OEM enterprise specs are readily available on B2B platforms, with 20TB units priced between $608 and $650 depending on volume. AlibabaAlibaba

Digital Storage And Memory Projections For 2026, Part 1
www.forbes.com
I published the chart, shown below on Seagate’s laboratory demonstrations and product maturity, showing about 5 years for product maturity from laboratory demonstrations. The chart shows 40+TB HDDs by 2026 and 50+TB drives by 2028 with 100TB HDDs possible by the early 2030’s. Seagate's laboratory demonstation to mature product trendSeagate Technology For instance, Seagate reported that over 87% of their shipped capacity was for nearline drives in C3Q 2025. By 2030 we estimate that over 90% of all shipping HDDs will be for nearline applications. The nearline drives have higher capacity and sell for higher prices, as a consequence, as the percentage of nearline HDD grew the average sales price of HDDs has been generally increasing since 2015 as shown below. Hard disk drive average sales price trendsCoughlin Associates, Inc. Covering Digital Storage Technology & Market. IEEE President in 2024 ... For several years I have written a series of articles outlining my projections for various digital storage and non-volatile memory technologies for the coming year and beyond. This will be the first of my projection articles for 2026, focusing on magnetic recording technology, particularly hard disk drives (HDDs) and magnetic tape. Note that reporting changes by Seagate and Western Digital will make it harder to track ASPs for HDDs in the future. Results for the final quarter of 2024 have not been announced, but my estimates project that overall HDD unit shipments in 2025 will be about the same as in 2024, at about 124M units, perhaps ending the long term reduced HDD shipment trends since the peak shipments in 2010.
Seagate beats revenue forecast as datacenter disk demand surges
blocksandfiles.com
Seagate surpassed the high end of the prior quarter’s $2.8 billion revenue outlook with $2.83 billion for its second fiscal 2026 quarter – a 21.5 percent rise year-on-year based on strong datacenter disk drive demand. There was a $702 million GAAP profit, up 62 percent year-on-year and representing 24.8 percent of its revenues. It was the highest profit for Seagate in six years. For comparison, data protection supplier Commvault reported profits of $18 million, just 5.73 percent of its revenues. It operates in a market with multiple major and minor competitors, whereas Seagate has one main and one minor competitor in the oligopolistic disk drive market. Datacenter revenue increased 28 percent year-on-year to $2.2 billion, supported by ongoing demand strength from global cloud customers and sequential growth across the enterprise/OEM markets. Looking ahead, nearline EB capacity is allocated through calendar 2026, and long-term agreements are in place with major cloud customers through calendar 2027, with multiple CSPs discussing demand projections for calendar 2028. The HAMR drive transition is near completion. Current Mozaic 3+ generation HAMR-based drives continue to ramp. Seagate completed qualifications with all major US CSPs and says it’s on track to complete remaining global CSP qualifications in 1H CY26. Seagate’s focus on nearline, mass-capacity drives saw 165 EB of nearline capacity shipped, up 31 percent annually, with just 25 EB of non-nearline capacity shipped, flat year-on-year. Average capacity per nearline drive rose 22 percent to 23 TB. This staggering pace of growth extends to other cloud video platforms and doesn’t yet include the full surge in content generation expected from emerging AI-driven video applications.” ... And, of course, AI: “With the deployment of AI agents at the edge, where untapped data often resides, we believe the stage is set for a sustained and meaningful increase in data generated and stored that will support inferencing, continuous training and also maintain model integrity.” · Mosley sees a stable and growing future for Seagate: “Our deep expertise across mechanical engineering, material science, nanoscale fabrication and now advanced photonics, not only enable Seagate to deliver on the HAMR roadmap, but also creates a durable competitive moat for hard drive technology well into the future.”

Seagate claims the new drives will have a cheaper cost per TB compared to existing drive models. The series was initially only available to enterprise markets, but is available to end users as of mid of July 2025. In February 2025, Seagate announced it would acquire HDD equipment maker Intevac for $119 million in an all-cash deal. In March 2026, Mozaic 4+ HAMR platform, 44TB (4.4TB per disc), Gen 2 superlattice platinum-alloy media, Gen 2 plasmonic writer, Gen 8 spintronic reader, 7nm integrated controller, hyperscale production environments. In 2003, Seagate re-entered the HDD market for notebook computers and provided the 1-inch hard drives for the first iPods. This led to a trend of digital devices being created with progressively more and more memory, especially in cameras and music devices. Skyhawk – Surveillance system recording drives for use in devices like DVRs or NVRs that come in 2 series. The first series, the Skyhawk AI, has capacities of 8–18 TB, regular or helium drive type, CMR recording technology, and speeds up to 260 MB/s. A 32 TB variant, with speeds up to 285 MB/s, was released in January 2026. It was the first hard disk to fit the 5.25-inch form factor of the Shugart mini-floppy drive. It used a Modified Frequency Modulation (MFM) encoding and in the following year released a 10 MB version, the ST-412. With this, Seagate secured a contract as a major OEM supplier for the IBM XT, IBM's first personal computer to contain a hard disk. Seagate developed the first 5.25-inch hard disk drive (HDD), the 5-megabyte ST-506, in 1980. They were a major supplier in the microcomputer market during the 1980s, especially after the introduction of the IBM XT in 1983. Much of its growth has come through its acquisition of competitors.
