Throat microphone - Wikipedia
en.wikipedia.org
A throat microphone, also called a laryngophone, is a type of contact microphone that absorbs vibrations directly from the wearer's throat by way of single or dual sensors worn against the neck. The sensors, called transducers, can pick up speech even in extremely noisy or windy environments, such as on a motorcycle or in a nightclub. Throat microphones have maintained their presence in the military, law enforcement, and emergency services. Newer single-transducer designs are available that make the throat microphone much more comfortable to wear than earlier units and also better balance transmission quality. Other types of microphones do not function well under these conditions because of high levels of background noise. Advanced laryngophones are able to pick up whispers, and therefore perform well in environments where communicating with others at a distance in silence is required, such as during covert military or law enforcement operations. Throat microphones are also very useful when helmets or respiratory protection is required. Many full-face SCBA, CABA, SAR Respirator, Elastomeric Respirator, N95 Respirator PAPR, or re-breather masks do not have a provision for a microphone inside the mask. The throat microphone can be used safely, as it is positioned outside the mask's face seal and as such does not compromise the respiratory protection provided by the mask, nor does it violate mask approvals and certification. The contact microphone is a simple accelerometer containing a piezo-electric ceramic disc as the pick-up unit. The disc is enclosed in a metal container of 15 mm in diameter and 5 mm in thickness and weighs about 20 grams. Charles Edmond Prince led the development of throat microphones for the British during World War I for use in the noisy and windy environment of aircraft cockpits.
Throat Microphones – Then and Now

Motorcycle and extreme sports enthusiasts - lack of interference from wind noise with the need for communication has caused this use case to gain traction in recent years · With changing safety regulations, respiratory equipment is becoming more of a requirement on job sites. Regular headsets or boom mics don’t fit the bill, as having a mask over the user’s mouth complicates communications. A throat microphone is a good communications option in these instances. Do you think throat mics might work well in your environment? Contact Sensear today to discover how this technology might be put to work in your business. German pilots and tank crews were the first to use the throat mic over the traditional speaking microphone during World War II. The German throat mic (L38114) consisted of two microphones attached by a leather-wrapped, magnetic sheet metal neck set that was not adjustable. With the increasing need for combat and oxygen masks for higher altitude flights, Allied troops discovered soon after, the need for unobstructed, “hands-free” communication solutions. The most popular USAF throat mic was the T-30. This mic was strapped around the neck with two 1-inch round pickups contacting the throat near Adam’s apple, anchored by an elastic strap.

Entry-level throat microphones often use basic transducers, while professional-grade systems incorporate advanced, highly sensitive transponder designs. IASUS Concepts has continuously evolved its transponder technology across multiple generations, improving sensitivity, durability, and consistency. Some models use dual transponders to enhance balance and signal capture, while others focus on optimized single-transponder designs for specific applications. Partners and users choose IASUS throat microphone headsets for their durability, transponder sensitivity, and ability to perform consistently in the most demanding environments. This long-term commitment to throat microphone development has positioned IASUS Concepts as a trusted name in advanced communication technology. IASUS Concepts has been developing and refining throat microphone technology continuously since 2001. IASUS throat microphone headsets are trusted by professionals and enthusiasts who operate in high-noise, high-wind, and mission-critical environments, and are relied upon by partners and integrators who demand consistent, dependable communication performance. A throat microphone, also known as a laryngophone, is a type of contact microphone that captures vocal vibrations directly from the user’s throat rather than from airborne sound.
Throat Mic Guide: How to Choose the Right One for Your Use Case

Hybrid throat + ambient mics: Some newer units blend throat vibration data with filtered ambient pickup to restore higher frequencies. Still rare and expensive. When it’s worth caring about: Only if voice clarity is mission-critical *and* you operate in variable-noise settings (e.g., transitioning between quiet indoor briefing and loud outdoor ops). When you don’t need to overthink it: For any single-environment use case — hybrid adds complexity without measurable gain. Remote coordination in high-noise jobs (e.g., construction site foremen, airport ramp agents) increasingly requires hands-free, reliable voice input — and throat mics work where bone-conduction headsets still struggle with intelligibility in >85 dB zones. If you’re a typical user, you don’t need to overthink this. Popularity ≠ universal suitability. It reflects narrow but persistent gaps — not broad superiority. Not all throat mics are built the same. Three common configurations exist — each with distinct trade-offs: Single-sensor analog units: Simple, rugged, low-latency. Follow this sequence — skip steps that don’t apply to your use case: Confirm the noise problem is unsolvable otherwise. Try a windscreen + boom mic first. If voice cuts out above 40 mph or under respirator seal, throat mic is justified. Verify compatibility with your existing radio, intercom, or headset. Check connector type (3.5mm TRRS? 4-pin aviation?), PTT voltage, and impedance. Throat mics offer no advantage — and actively harm audio quality. If you’re a typical user, you don’t need to overthink this. Start with a mid-tier model, validate fit and function in your actual use case, and upgrade only if specific gaps emerge — not because specs look better on paper.
