The Sony PDW (Professional Disc for XDCAM) product line has officially transitioned from a primary acquisition format to a legacy and archival support role. While the hardware, such as the iconic PDW-F800 and PDW-700 camcorders, has been discontinued, the market for professional discs (PFD series) remains active to support massive global broadcast archives. Market Trends & Product Status

* Acquisition Shift: The industry has almost entirely shifted to solid-state media like CFexpress Type B and SDXC (UHS-II). CFexpress offers write speeds up to 3,400MB/s, compared to the ~50Mbps typical of XDCAM disc workflows, facilitating modern 4K/8K and RAW production. Lexar

* Legacy Hardware Demand: There is a stable secondary market for PDW-U1 and PDW-U2 external drives, which are essential for offloading archived disc footage to modern servers. Refurbished PDW-U2 units currently retail between $420 and $1,880, depending on condition. Adorama Bsbroadcast

* Camcorder Replacement: Sony now directs users looking for PDW-F800 replacements toward their PXW series (e.g., PXW-Z450), which utilizes SxS or SD cards via adapters. Lexar Tapeandmedia

Pricing & Supply Chain Insights

* Disc Availability: Sony continues to manufacture PFD23A (23GB), PFD50DLP (50GB), and PFD128QLW (128GB) discs. These are primarily sold through specialized media distributors rather than general consumer platforms. Tapeandmedia Pro

* Bulk Pricing Tiers:

* PFD23A (Single Layer): ~$16.95/unit.

* PFD50DLP (Dual Layer): ~$35.95/unit.

* PFD128QLW (Quad Layer): ~$101.60/unit. Tapeandmedia

* Regional Stock: Suppliers like TapeandMedia (US) and Expandore (Asia) maintain active stock for immediate shipping, though 128GB quad-layer discs often require special orders for bulk quantities. Expandore Tapeandmedia
