The SPOT Trace is for adventurers but it’s not very user-friendly. ... It’s waterproof. ... The power button is hard to work. Why you can trust Top Ten Reviews Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test. ... This GPS tracker is rugged and compact, so you don’t have to worry about breaking it or getting it wet. It depends on what you’re going to use the Trace for, but it has several features you may find useful. Dock mode will monitor something primarily stored in water or movement alerts will tell you if the tracker has moved at all. You can also set up a daily status alert so you won’t have to wonder if the Trace is still working. We also took it out to a very remote hiking trail in the mountains and discovered it and the other SPOT tracker were the only two that worked. Nevertheless, it definitely took longer than 5 minutes to update the location and lacks the SOS button of the Gen3. ... The Trace app is easy to set up, it’s just not as pretty to look at or fun to use as some of the others we tested. However you use the Trace, you can track on your desktop browser or a free app on your smart phone. ... To test this tracker we drove it around while it was set to communicate with the app every 5 minutes. It did so, but it isn’t as by-the-minute as other real time trackers like the Veriot Venture.

And joining this fleet of gadgets sending your data to space and then back down again is the SPOT Trace satellite tracker. A small, simple, nondescript black box with just one button. ... The biggest thing to point out here is that the SPOT Trace is NOT a satellite communicator like the SPOT X or Garmin inReach products. The only way to interact with it that doesn’t require a USB cable is the power button. On, or off. That’s it. And it isn’t a mobile GPS unit like the various handheld map tools from Garmin or Suunto. The advantage the Trace has over, say a GPS watch, is it’s insanely long battery life. But that doesn’t really do anything for you in a cycling application. Meanwhile the watch can do other things too; fitness tracker stuff, helping the cyclist navigate, serving as a second screen for checking messages and the like. So to fund that SPOT does require a subscription in order for your Trace to talk to the satellites. Plans start at under $10 a month, but can go as high as $20 a month for a flexible plan that includes the most frequent update intervals. Not cheap, and since it’s comparable to the plan cost of satellite communicators or GPS units, it’s kind of hard to justify on it’s own. There is no display, and with no ability to connect to it directly from your smartphone it’s not capable of telling you where you are, unless you’re able to access the SPOT website from your phone, at which point you don’t need the Trace to tell you where you are. It would also make a poor option for live-tracking. It does offer location updates at 2.5 minute intervals, which is hard to fault. But those updates don’t include any of the metadata, like pace, elevation, or what have you that comes with satellite live-trackers from Garmin or Suunto.

As compact as that sounds, it's worth remembering that this is primarily a GPS device and requires line of sight to function. Global Telesat Communications, which manufacturers the device, says it can pick up satellites through fibreglass, glass and fabric. But it wont operate through metal. That places some limitations on where you can locate the device. In standard battery-operated config, it's waterproof up to 1m for 30 mins. A waterproof line-in power cable is available separately. Once configured, Spot Trace automatically sends a text and or email with your asset's GPS coordinates when movement is detected. Enter the Spot Trace personal GPS tracking device. The basics of the Spot Trace involve a small black box containing the GPS hardware and motion detection. The included software keeps you updated as to where your tracker is · Both initial set up and the various web-based interfaces are a little confusing. The overall feel is more 'pro' than 'consumer' in that regard, although it's not entirely impenetrable. A function of that lack of clarity is that we weren't sure during testing whether the device supported being attached to an object that was located out of satellite range. In other words, can you use the Spot Trace on a car in a locked garage and rely on it to wake up should the car leave the garage and start moving?

We’ve used other more feature-rich tracking devices, such as Arrowtrack, in our vehicles that can alert you of movement, speed, and direction, and set up geofencing. These units cost more than the Spot Trace but have lower annual costs. In any case, if you’re looking for a means to have your off-road rig alert you when it moves, this might just be what you need. ... Get the newest car reviews, hottest auto news, and expert analysis of the latest trends delivered straight to your inbox! We recently purchased a new Spot Trace theft-alert tracking device. It’s a small module that can detect vehicle movement and report it to you. It uses 100-percent satellite technology, which means it has a wide coverage range that includes remote locations far from civilization. It relies on GPS and low-orbit satellites but does not require any cellular system access. We set the Spot Trace in our truck one morning before we headed out into the desert. Once we started driving, the module detected movement and sent us an email a few minutes later. We drove into the desert and unloaded dirt bikes for a ride. We tossed the module in our hydration pack and hit the trails for a few hours. Once we returned home, we logged into our Spot Trace account online and were able to see the tracking reports the device transmitted. The online map showed our reported location in five-minute intervals. However, the vendor does caution obstructed skies or foliage could cause the unit to have trouble sending some transmissions.
