These pins are called jumpers, and are used to enable specific types of settings. They're not used so much with modern hard drives, except in some special circumstances. If you're under a certain age, or you just haven't been into computer hardware for long, you've probably never heard of hard drive jumpers. You enable particular settings by placing a jumper shunt onto specific pins---creating an electrical circuit between them. The settings these jumpers enable are hard-coded onto a drive's programmed printed circuit board. So what do jumpers do? Well, not so much anymore. Back before SATA became the standard interface for drives, computers used the Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) standard. So why are the jumper pins still around? Well, most drives don't have them at all. On those that do, they enable a few specialized settings. Exactly what the pins do depends on your drive and its manufacturer. For example, Western Digital's full-sized SATA hard drives let you use jumpers to set the following parameters: You'll find the relevant support site that tells you which ones to use. Unless you have need of those specialty settings, you can safely ignore the jumper pins on your drive. It will work fine without them on pretty much any computer made in the last ten years. Most of the options above are included for the sake of backwards compatibility.

Now obviously this is not sata but a Micro-B plug directly soldered onto the board. But I wonder, what stops me from making an internal connector or can I even do one? What are those pins? ... The pins are likely diagnostic connectors. The drive is made to be used with that USB connector, and there isn't a way to convert it to SATA. You can shuck the Seasgate ones. they use internal drives... ... Those are diagnostic pins. They are used internally to perform certain tests, and may be used by some enclosures to provide extraneous features. As for converting to SATA, afraid you are plumb out of luck. The only shuckable 2,5" drives are Seagate and Maxtor ... And here I thought they were pins for the old master/slave configuration stuff.

Even tiny 1.8" HDDs use metal for the body, although they tend to be made from aluminum, rather than steel, as they're designed to be as light as possible. Flipping the drive over, we can see a circuit board and a bunch of connections. The one at the top of the board is for the motor that spins the disks, whereas the bottom three are, from left to right, jumper pins to allow the drive to be configured for certain setups, SATA (Serial ATA) data, and SATA power.
