To use MSI's MAG nomenclature, Tomahawks sit in the middle of MSI's product stack, above the entry level gaming oriented MPG range and below the high end MEG range. The MSI Z790 Tomahawk Max WiFi is an excellent offering with a high quality set of features that make it a very competitive offering in its price range. MSI deserves credit for not pushing the price of the Max version above its non-Max predecessor. That's a pretty rare thing for any product in today's inflation hit economy, so well done MSI. Here's a surprise. The Tomahawk Max WiFi costs less than its predecessor did at the time of its launch. Apart from our exchange rate handicapped Aussie friends, that's less than the $319 / £337 / AU$569 of the non-Max MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi. Straight away MSI has done gamers a service!

The MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi—as the name suggests—is a part of MSI's MAG range, its second tier sub brand. Perhaps its lack of PCIe 5.0 M.2 support counts against and it requires good airflow if you subject it to heavy loads, but the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk is still a solid, feature-rich board that delivers a core feature set that will suit 95% or more of users. Do you need to spend more? The MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk Wi-Fi is proof that you don't need to spend really big bucks on a Z790 board unless you must have a specific feature. The Z790 Tomahawk comes with seven SATA ports. For bulk storage, SATA still has a place and those seven ports alone may be a deal maker for some users. But in our tests of it, we’ll naturally be interested in the overall implementation of all the features. That is, what MSI managed better or worse compared to competing models. The 14th generation of Intel Core processors (Raptor Lake Refresh) is an exception, as with it, motherboards with a new chipset have not been released, but new models have been released that are built on the old chipset (Intel Z790). So the added value is on a different level, outside of the chipset. Over that year or so, of course, motherboard manufacturers have been working on various aspects, which we’ll go through in turn. ... We’ve got quite a representation of MSI Tomahawk motherboard tests, both AMD and Intel platforms, so you can see how the various details within this lineup have changed over time. MSI has come prepared for this refresh with multiple product lines from the entry-level Pro Z790-P to the flagship MEG Z790 Godlike. The MAG naming convention serves as MSI's entry-midrange for Intel motherboards. These tend to focus on essentials rather than premium features. The MAG Z790 Tomahawk is the only entry in the MAG family currently, though this may be expanded upon at a later date. The MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi comes in two variants, one DDR5 and the other DDR4. The motherboard is this review is the latter. Don't be fooled into thinking the DDR4 version is inferior. Rather, besides the support memory type, everything is the same between both versions. Configured with a 16+1+1 VRM, PCIe Gen5 slot for the graphics cards, four M.2 Gen4 sockets and seven SATA ports, this motherboard is ready for action! To round out, the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi DDR4 also features great connectivity with WiFi 6E and 2.5G LAN for those who need to transfer data quickly.
