The summer vacation for the DACMan is over, and that means lots of DAC reviews will be coming soon-ish. And what would be a better way to kick things off than with the best DAC Topping Audio has ever made? Almost two years ago, Topping unleashed their mightiest DAC, the DX9, which carried 15 years … While it borrows some technology from the D90 III Discrete and sonic attributes from the DX9 line, this is still quite a different animal, one that has been polished for more than three years now. At the High End Show 2024 (more than two years ago), Topping was already showing off a working prototype for the D900, and after chatting with their Chief Engineer for a couple of minutes, it was clear to me that they didn’t want to rush things with their soon-to-be flagship unit. That particular unit wasn’t only their latest DAC release, but their absolute first DAC build from scratch using their own single-bit D-to-A conversion technique; a brand new I/V conversion and output stage were also built from scratch, aiming for a sound that would again impress music lovers and audio nerds alike. The D90 III Discrete started a new chapter for Topping, one that would reinvent the brand and pave the road for a future flagship unit. There were a few exceptions to this formula, but usually a DAC + active preamp combo sounded considerably more expensive. Topping Audio, however, solved the biggest gripe I had with 99% DAC releases, including an actual active preamplifier stage into the D900!

Building on this track record, Topping has demonstrated a continued drive for innovation and quality as audio technology continues to evolve. While working primarily with AKM and ESS DACs, Topping also develops its own in-house DAC modules. Today, we will take a look at one of those in-house designs. The D90 III Discrete features Topping’s proprietary fully discrete 1-bit DAC architecture, powered by the PSRM (Phase-Switching Reference Modulator) module, a CPLD jitter reduction algorithm, and a newly designed power supply. Topping D90 III Discrete is the latest addition to the Topping lineup, and it brings with it several new designs, mostly internally. Topping’s new fully discrete 1-bit DAC architecture utilizing Topping’s proprietary PSRM (Phase-Switching Reference Modulator) resides at D90 III Discrete’s core. Before deep diving into the sound section, let me give you a spoiler here. It is the BEST DAC I heard under 1k$. Topping has also equipped this DAC with advanced jitter reduction technology, using in-house CPLD algos to achieve jitter levels as low as -157 dB.

Their products are minimalist in appearance, but that ends at the surface. Inside are components that they design themselves, and the performance is beyond, beyond. Even at $110, their D10s DAC is amazing. But their latest iteration, the D900, is setting some standards for performance. Topping has already built a reputation for delivering extraordinary measurements at prices that challenge the industry’s expectations. With the release of the D900, the company positions itself not merely as a value leader but as a serious contender for legendary performance. By dividing and averaging the conversion process across multiple phases, PSRM reduces noise and distortion to vanishingly low levels, pushing the boundaries of what even the most demanding listener can perceive. Combined with an uncompromising analog output stage and precision clocking, this technology signals that the D900 is not just another high-end DAC—it is a potential landmark in digital audio design. I suspect this may be something that can be corrected with a firmware update. I also noticed that if left in standby (toggle on rear turned on, front control turned off), the D900 turns on by itself once in a while if I have it connected to my laptop that is in sleep mode.
