Happy Birthday, Kodak Tri-X – The Thoughts & Photography of Johnny ...

After 67 years, only the newest photographers don’t have an opinion on this ubiquitous film but they are probably going to find out about it soon and begin connecting the dots. The rest of us either cut our teeth on it or continue to use Tri-X regularly and have our own personal stories with this film. Kodak Tri-X is perhaps so common and widely used that it would not only be impossible to imagine a world without it but we may even forget just how special a product that it is. Kodak Tri-X, as a concept, has been around since the 1940's when it was a 200 ISO b&w sheet film. Because it was their first fast film, when Kodak released the 400 ISO roll film version, the Tri-X name was maintained. The combination of hand-held cameras and high-speed Tri-X film was transformative for photojournalism and for cinema. Introduced around 1940, in sheets rated at ASA daylight 200 and tungsten 160, it was one of Kodak's first high-speed (for the time) black and white films. Tri-X was released in 35 mm and 120 formats in 1954. Currently it is available in two speeds, ISO 320/26° (320TXP) and 400/27° (400TX). A popular method for pushing Tri-X film is using highly diluted developers with little or no agitation and extended development times. This method which is referred to as "stand" or "semi-stand" development, can allow the film to be pushed to speeds up to EI 3200 or 6400. Tri-X panchromatic film was once one of the most popular films used by photojournalists and many amateurs. Since the advent of digital photography, Tri-X has all but fallen out of use in newspaper journalism, though it remains popular in documentary journalism. Tri-X has undergone a number of minor engineering changes during its long history. An early change in ASA (ISO) speed from 200 to 400, around 1960, was due to a change in the ASA standard rather than the film formulation. The speed for tungsten lighting (3200 K) is ISO 160 and for daylight ISO 200 when processed as reversal. It can also be processed as a negative at a small loss of speed while the grain will be slightly increased. ... A Tri-X 35mm (135) film canister, version 2002. ... ↑ Growcoot, Matt. The story of Tri-X is unique. It goes to the heart of how we see and what we see and what we may be losing as billions of casual, digital snaps are taken daily and as photographic integrity is subverted by the dead, flawless, retouched faces of actors and models that gaze blankly out at us. As a commercial product, Tri-X is 60 this year. Though it is true to say that professional digital photography of the face has converged on the dead, waxy, heavily retouched style that dominates the glossy magazines, it should also be remembered that good old-fashioned darkroom technique also involved extensive retouching. The finished product was different but no less manipulated. Nevertheless, it was Tri-X that created the possibility and then the demand for urgency, contrast, grain and drama in photography. He did not know: all he did know is that his technicians could produce the Tri-X look he liked. He never touches a computer and his post-production work is done by assistants at his studio in Paris. In fact, and this is a sign of the image-making times, many widely available digital photo-editing programmes now offer “film emulation”. You can simply scroll through a list and pick which type of film you want. This was so successful that even Nikon, one of the big makers of professional digital cameras, went so far as to produce the Df, a digital camera designed to look like the old Nikon F on which so much Tri-X was shot. It is an absurd and ungainly product costing over £2,700, which, by my reckoning, means you are paying at least £1,000 for the knurled metal knobs on top. If that all represents a 180-degree turn away from digital perfection, some have gone even further, rejecting the perfect via a kind of 360-degree turn. Google Street View famously, notoriously, set out to photograph all the streets in the world using car-borne digital cameras.

TRI-X 400 Film Reviews & Photos - The Darkroom Photo Lab

It’s just got a look, you won’t find a serious rival and it’s been in production since 54. A new Leica, the all mechanical M-A was introduced a short while ago, a free roll of Tri-X was included. This is because the film and the M3 both debuted in 54. I use Tri-X in my very shabby 1955 M3, reputed to have been used in ‘Nam’. ... The photos I took with the film had some good lighting especially when taking portraits. Tri-X 400 one of the most popular over films, not just in black and white, but of all film. It’s known for its classic and absolutely beautiful grain that hasn’t changed since 1954 as well as its song contrast and rich tones Kodak Tri-X 400 is one of the most iconic film stocks ever made. Introduced in 1954, it’s been a favorite among photographers for decades thanks to its bold contrast, rich tones, and distinctive grain that has remained unchanged for generations. Tri-X has excellent exposure latitude, making it a forgiving and versatile film that performs beautifully in a wide range of conditions. It looks fantastic at its native ISO 400, producing strong contrast and deep, expressive tonality – one of the many reasons it’s a favorite here at The Darkroom Lab. It also pushes extremely well, up to three stops, giving photographers plenty of flexibility in low light or when a punchier look is desired.
