Product Overview: UMD Switch for PSP
The "UMD switch" refers to critical sensor components on the Sony PSP motherboard that manage the Universal Media Disc (UMD) drive's operation. These are typically surface-mount devices (SMD) that signal the console when a disc is present or the door is closed ZedlabzZedlabz.
#### Core Product Variants
- 1UMD Media Activation Sensor: A 4-leg SMD switch that detects the presence of a disc. If faulty, the PSP will not display the UMD icon even with a disc inserted Zedlabz.
- 2UMD Door Close Sensor: A tactile pressure switch (typically 3-leg) that detects when the drive door is latched. A common failure is the physical actuator "pole" snapping off Zedlabz.
- 3Motherboard Switch (General): Controls the UMD system's on/off state based on mechanical triggers within the drive Consoletronics.
Compatibility Note: While media activation sensors are broadly compatible across PSP 1000, 2000, 3000, and E1000 (Street) models, door close sensors have specific designs for different series (e.g., PSP 2000/3000 specific variants) ZedlabzZedlabz.

r/PSP on Reddit: UMD drive / sensor repair

Try Ali express if you want to replace the switch otherwise short the pads either with solder or some well placed tin foil, it's documented here in this thread. ... Turns out, I don't have the "skills" to solder it on nor I have appropriate equipment to do it. I just have to wait for a expert to make it work 😞 ... How can i disconnect the umd lector it makes sounds and it doenst even read disks, can i just unplug all the part? ... Took apart psp 3000 and now UMD drive won’t read games. Good day all, I am attempting to repair this PSP Street. It is not reading disks and upon inspection I notice the little lever switch that indicates… Now I see from searching that others have replaced the switch but that is a little dicey as the switch is actually mounted to the mobo, not the UMD drive and I am not yet used to working on pads that small (I am willing to practice and return to this repair) but there maybe an easier way - what if I (very scientifically) dropped some solder in there and permanently bridged the switch. I imagine the PSP will simply act as though a disk is always inserted - that would not be so bad right? One Ebayer wanted £25 for this part alone - well bugger that, the PSP itself was only £20 so I will make the best I can without paying silly money. ... Update, as it may help others. Bridged the UMD detector pads with solder and a tiny bit of wire. Removing the switch left very little to work off but luckily there are few components nearby so it is doable.
