Uv Resistant Class5
Overview
Product sourcing insights & recommendations
The phrase "UV Resistant Class 5" typically refers to the highest possible rating for color fastness on the AATCC/ISO Grey Scale, indicating that a material will show no visible fading after intense exposure to ultraviolet light PhiferHnleading. While sometimes confused with skin protection ratings (UPF), Class 5 is an aesthetic performance standard critical for high-end outdoor products.
Core Industry Definitions
* Grey Scale Grade 5: The industry gold standard for outdoor durability. It confirms that the fabric or plastic maintains its original color perfectly after standardized UV weathering tests Phifer.
* UV Standard 801 (UPF 80): In the context of sun protection, the highest safety level is often UPF 80, which allows individuals to stay in the sun 80 times longer than they could with unprotected skin Hohenstein.
Market Trends & Applications
* Aesthetic Preservation: High-end outdoor furniture, marine upholstery, and luxury awnings are the primary markets for "Class 5" materials. Manufacturers like Tenghui Textiles and Shandong Hengtai now offer acrylic fabrics with explicit "5 Grade" color fastness and warranties extending up to 5 years AlibabaAlibaba.
* Solution-Dyed Innovation: The market is shifting away from surface-treated fabrics toward solution-dyed fibers. By locking color into the polymer itself before extrusion, manufacturers can achieve permanent Class 5 resistance that doesn't wash or wear off PhiferAlibaba.
* Industrial Plastics: Beyond textiles, multi-layer greenhouse films (up to 5-layer structures) are emerging to provide balanced UV protection for agriculture, though these are often rated by "years of service" rather than numerical classes Alibaba.
I have compiled a list of high-end outdoor and awning fabrics that meet these rigorous Class 5 standards for your review.

How to Choose Sun Protection UPF Clothing | REI Expert Advice
www.rei.com
Why you don't see ratings below UPF 15: Fabrics rated below UPF 15 are not considered UV-protective. A typical white cotton T-shirt, for example, offers about a UPF 5 rating, which means that 1/5th (roughly 20%) of available UV radiation passes through it. "UV-resistant" refers to a material’s resistance to degradation from UV exposure. "UV-protective" is a general term that suggests a garment provides some protection against UV rays. For a garment to earn a UPF rating, it must pass several standardized tests, Simpson says. A UPF rating of 30 indicates the fabric of a garment will allow 1/30th (roughly 3%) of available UV radiation to pass through it. A garment rated UPF 50 permits only 1/50th (roughly 2%) UV transmission. One of the outdoors' greatest joys is basking in the sun's soft, warm glow. But, like so many of life's pleasures, it's best done in moderation. Sunlight includes rays of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can lead to sunburn, premature skin aging and skin cancer with exposure.

The UV Index scale used in the United States conforms with international guidelines for UVI reporting established by the World Health Organization. If your shadow is taller than you are (in the early morning and late afternoon), your UV exposure is likely to be lower. If your shadow is shorter than you are (around midday), you are being exposed to higher levels of UV radiation.
Sun Resistant & UV Fabric: A Guide To Prevent Fading | Phifer
www.phifer.com
Phifer’s process for testing our exterior Designed Fabrics for sun resistance involves exposing our fabrics to a UV source, elevated temperatures and moisture. Samples are then evaluated using the AATCC Grey Scale standard. The value of 5 representing no minimum change, and the value of 4 representing no visible change. Our vinyl-coated polyester fabric range, Phifertex is an incredibly durable material with high UV/fade resistance. The color of vinyl-coated polyester mesh is “locked in” to the PVC coating, which means it is much less likely to fade in the sun. It’s also infused with Microban®, an antimicrobial treatment that helps fight the growth of mold and mildew. For an objective explanation of a fabric’s level of sun resistance, we can look at independent industry standards. The most common measure of sun resistance is “hours to fade.” Using this standard, fabrics are tested in a lab using special UV lights. This process simulates years of sun exposure in a matter of days or weeks. The fabric is observed in experiments that measure how long a sample takes to show a noticeable color change. Phifer tests our fabric in a variety of ways to ensure we surpass industry standards: A sun-resistant fabric is one that has been treated to withstand UV rays, which account for approximately 10% of the sun’s light. UV stands for “ultraviolet,” which is a form of light wave or radiation. UV rays have a shorter wavelength than visible light and a longer wavelength than X-rays.
UV Index Umbrella Guide: Protection for Every UV Level (1-11+)
uv-blocker.com
The UV index is a standardized scale from the World Health Organization (WHO) that quantifies the risk of solar UV radiation. It calculates the strength of sunburning UV radiation at a specific time and place. The scale is linear: a UV index of 10 is twice as intense as a UV index of 5. This linearity means that as the number doubles, the time it takes for skin to burn is cut in half. A person who burns in 60 minutes at UV 5 will burn in approximately 30 minutes at UV 10. This direct correlation makes the index a critical tool for planning outdoor activities, far more reliable than judging by brightness or heat. ... Time of day: UV radiation peaks between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Season: Stronger during summer months when the sun is higher in the sky. Latitude: Closer to the equator means stronger UV radiation. Standard UV guidelines are for average sensitivities, but many groups need a more conservative approach. Fair Skin (Fitzpatrick I-II): Individuals with very fair skin, red or blonde hair, and blue or green eyes should shift all recommendations down by one level. For this group, a UV umbrella is recommended starting at UV 5 instead of UV 6. UV index 3 is classified as "Moderate" risk, and fair-skinned individuals can burn within 25-45 minutes without protection at this level. While UV 3 doesn't require a UV umbrella for most people, sunscreen and a hat are recommended for any extended time outdoors. ... A UV-rated umbrella is recommended starting at UV index 6 (High) and becomes essential at UV index 8+ (Very High) when sunscreen alone may not prevent burns during extended outdoor time. Standard umbrellas block only 50-77% of UV rays.
UV STANDARD 801 - one of the most stringent testing and certification ...
www.uvstandard801.com
Textile sun protection is the method of choice when it comes to a protective effect that covers as large an area as possible and which is as comprehensive as possible. Clothing and shading materials that have been tested according to UV STANDARD 801 provide the most reliable sun protection when outdoors. To determine and identify the UV protection factor of textile materials, there must be appropriate testing and certification. For this reason, there is the UV STANDARD 801 label which can be trusted when selecting suitable UV protective clothing and UV shading articles. The UV protection factor specified on the UV STANDARD 801 label of a tested product gives information on how much longer the user of the UV protective clothing or UV shading articles can stay in the sun without experiencing skin damage. The UV STANDARD 801 is one of the most stringent testing and certification systems for clothing and shading textiles in the world.
Sun protective clothing - Wikipedia
en.wikipedia.org
As sun protective clothing is usually meant to be worn during warm and humid weather, some UV-blocking textiles and clothing may be designed with ventilated weaves, moisture wicking and antibacterial properties to assist in cooling and breathability. UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) represents the ratio of sunburn-causing UV without and with the protection of the fabric, similar to SPF (sun protection factor) ratings for sunscreen. While standard summer fabrics have UPF ~6, sun protective clothing typically has UPF ~30, which means that only 1 out of ~30 units of UV will pass through (~3%). A relatively new rating designation for sun protective textiles and clothing is UPF (ultraviolet protection factor), which represents the ratio of sunburn-causing UV measured without and with the protection of the fabric. For example, a fabric rated UPF 30 means that, if 30 units of UV fall on the fabric, only 1 unit will pass through to the skin. Although clothing has been used for protection against solar exposure for thousands of years, modern sun protective clothing was popularized (but not exclusively used) in Australia as an option or adjunct to sunscreen lotions and sunblock creams. Sun protective clothing and UV protective fabrics in Australia now follow a lab-testing procedure regulated by a Commonwealth agency: ARPANSA. This standard was established in 1996 after work by Australian swimwear companies. When the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discontinued regulating sun-protective clothing, the Solar Protective Factory (whose CEO chaired the ASTM Committee) took the lead in developing the UPF testing protocols and labeling standards that are presently used in the United States. In 1992, the FDA reviewed clothing that was being marketed with claims of sun protection (SPF, % UV blockage, or skin cancer prevention). The UPF rating system may eventually be adopted by interested apparel/textile/fabric manufacturers as a "value added" program for consumer safety and awareness. Before UPF standards were in place (which directly measure a fabric's ability to block UV radiation), clothing was previously rated using SPF standards (which measure how long a person's skin takes to redden).
