Hello, I was wondering if any of you had a picture or could take a picture of the W140 remote key please? I was wondering what it looked like in person. I wanted to know how many keys came with the W140 and how did the Valet key work as well. What functions do the keys hold and what kind of range do you get with these keys does the key have to be directly pointed at the vehicle for it to remotely unlock the car? A red light on the door handle (or mirror) means your doors are locked A green light on the door handle (or mirror) means your doors are unlocked No light when you push the button means your locking system is not working and you will have to lock doors manually. No horns, no beeps, no flashing parking lights, no brass bands, no music plays, no angels blowing trumpets, when you use your single button remote. In case you missed it above, the ONLY indicator is the signal light in the door handle, red means locked, green means unlocked....the same signal light is at the trunk lock also. I don't know if different remote codes can be programmed to the car or if remotes have to be matching codes. Replacement Master/Valet keys are $30-50 or more at the dealership only. Keys are machined off site and sent to dealership..you won't pick them up the first time you request a key...... You MUST have title/registration and photo ID to get a key. That's all I know based on my recent experience buying a 94 S420 and needing additional keys. ... Only early W140's had key's which didn't attach to key rings - my original 1993 remote has a plastic loop. I guess you could find a wrecked W220 remove all the parts from it and hook them into your W140, but that would be so much effort for not much gain. ... Thanks for the response guys. Anyone here have a picture of what it looks like? No Key Ring??? That's odd. So I notice there is only 1 button you press? There isn't separated door lock and unlock and trunk buttons like on other vehicles? How hard is it to change and replace the batteries? ... There were three versions of the remote, version 1 is 1.5 inches wide.

You really need to at least try to perform the correct reset proceedure before looking for other issues that may or may not exist. I would try substituting the use of the drivers door in the sequence with the passenger door that in your case has the emergency key slot. Hi Laszlo, Often the problem lies in the little push switch that is on the PCB inside the key case, over time this gets some real abuse and its only a fragile thing. If you are handy with electronics you can replace this with a fine soldering iron. So it should have not started with the alarm running – is the door locking working from the key (all doors lock unlock – signifying the door pump circuit is working correctly) It may be worth just trying the reset procedure just in case its got itself confused!

So here's what I've done to test the car's alarm system: Test (i): If I've been driving the car and I stop and turn the key to position 0 (or remove it altogether), 20 seconds later, all of the indicators on the car will flash once - this is what normally happens when the car is locked with the remote control, except in this case, I have not locked the car - and when I try to start the car again, the engine will crank but will not start and the red & green lights under the rear view mirror will flash alternately. (I believe the red & green lights flashing alternately means that the immobiliser is stopping the engine from starting). Then I use the remote control key fob to unlock the car when I return to it and it will start normally. So dare I ask, does anyone know what the problem is with this alarm system and more importantly, does anyone know of a solution? P.S. Here's a short clip of my aforementioned W140 S500 showing the alarm and central locking being engaged with the infrared remote control key fob; also showing how it can close the electric windows and sunroof automatically Of course our cars (here in Ireland I mean) are all right-hand-drive anyway, so they could be completely different! Been talking to my Merc mechanic and I might get him to take a look at the car sometime soon. Hopefully I won't have to find out about the relay location at all.... ... I guess no-one else has any wisdom to share on this issue with the infra-red remote central locking?
