The Western Digital Elements desktop drive is the best external hard drive for desktops. Because it’s larger than a portable external drive, you have to plug it into a power outlet as well as the USB port. But it comes in a wider range of capacities (from 4 TB to 26 TB) than the My Passport Ultra does, and it performed decently in our tests. It has a lot more storage for about the same price as a portable drive. We tested the 8 TB version of the WD Elements desktop drive, which costs the same as the 6 TB version of the portable WD My Passport drive. It’s speedier than a portable drive. The WD Elements drive read and wrote sequential files at about 240 MB/s on the CrystalDiskMark benchmark test, about twice the speed of the WD My Passport and other portable drives. This is ideal for folks who store massive photo libraries on their PCs. It has a USB Micro-B connector.
