The Xplova X5 Evo is an update to the original X5 that we tested last year. It’s the only full-feature GPS computer with onboard video recording, with a nice big colour screen and 720p video capability. Appropriately enough, given the name, it’s an evolution rather than a revolution, with a welcome £70 price cut and ... This screen isn’t user-configurable, but the other data screens are (unlike on the X5), allowing you to customise up to four screens of digital displays and up to three of graphs to show the metrics you need to see. It’s fairly straightforward to use and should satisfy the most numbers-driven cyclist’s needs. As a GPS computer, it has a lot going for it with a great screen and decent 12-hour battery life (although this does reduce if you use video recording a lot). The video recording is an unusual feature and the recording modes offer a useful range of functionality, although the output isn’t a match for the best action cameras. Xplova has engaged a UK-based technical support partner to provide customer support on the product, which is a welcome attempt to woo the European market.

When the Acer Xplova X5 was announced last year, it got a lot of attention for its headline-grabbing features: An integrated action camera, cellular connectivity, full color touchscreen with maps, and integrated nacho cheese dispenser. Well, maybe not the dispenser. There’s a number of really fascinating things within the Xplova X5 that aren’t seen anywhere else. Not just features for the sake of features, but some legit brilliant ideas that I looked at and was like “Why hasn’t anyone done that before?”. Some of them are obvious ideas that many have talked about, such as the camera (which I’ll come back to in a moment), and others are less obvious. The Xplova X5 is a full-featured mapping bike computer, not unlike that of the Edge 1000. In fact, they are almost identical in sizing in every way. But don’t mistake the above for thinking the potential in the X5 is bad. In fact, there are boatloads of lessons that companies like Garmin, Wahoo, Polar, and others can learn from the Xplova X5. And in turn, one can only hope that Acer reciprocates in learning those lessons from the leading bike computer companies.

Xplova’s X5 computer is a good, top-end multifunction GPS device with some neat integrated features. It’s good enough that against the only comparably priced competition – the Garmin Edge 1000 – it’d probably get my money. It’s certainly not perfect, but it’s a really interesting development in the GPS market, which will hopefully force the ... The X5 is IPX7 rated for waterproofing: that’s full immersion for half an hour, so if it falls off into a puddle you won’t lose your ride. It won’t fall off though, as it has a standard Garmin quarter-turn mount on the rear. It’s compatible with any Garmin mounts you might already have, and comes with its own out-front holder. Xplova X5 – rear (Image Credit: Farrelly Atkinson) One of the X5’s unique selling points is that it can be set to auto record based on certain criteria. So the camera can be told to fire up if your speed or your heart rate goes above a certain threshold, or the road/trail gets really steep, for example. Xplova X5 -camera (Image Credit: Farrelly Atkinson) My commute has one or two specific points where I’m likely to meet issues, and the new firmware on the X5 allows you to record at set points on a route, based on markers that you set up. I haven’t really had time to fully explore that yet, but it does mean you’ll need to set up and follow a route each time, rather than just press go. Xplova has its own portal where your rides are automatically uploaded via 3G or WiFi.

Update 6 September 2017: Xplova's UK PR got in touch to say that Xplova has launched an updated version of the X5 called the X5 Evo, which features a number of design improvements. Luckily, Xplova should work with Garmin compatible mounts, so there are plenty of aftermarket options if you’re prepared to ignore the warning in the manual about using third party mounts. The X5 is packaged well and I'm confident that updates could improve the interface significantly, but, as things stand, both the device and the online platform that accompany it feel rather half-baked. The X5 offers full navigation powered by Open Street Maps, and it works well. You can create routes with turn-by-turn instructions using Xplova’s own online platform or import them from other services. For ride logging, the X5 uploads to Xplova’s own service, which is convenient only if you aren’t already committed to a platform such as Strava or Garmin Connect.

XPLOVA X5 – Review of a high-end cycling Computer from Acer

These followed the acquisition of XPLOVA by ACER the previous year (Sep 2015). I finally got my hands on an X5 and below is what I think. ... It’s a well-featured, well-constructed ANT+ cycling computer that navigates over OSM maps and supports power meters. Or it would fit with a keen cyclist who is perhaps not so performance-orientated as some and who wants some sound electronic and social support for the weekend & holiday rides. Unfortunately, for XPLOVA, this means that the competition is something like MIO’s 505HC. It probably wins over the MIO (dated and also currently over-priced) in that the X5 seems well-powered for what it does. You could, instead, stack it up against an Edge 1000 but on a straight features comparison the Edge would always win (as Garmins always do). But you lot are quite discerning in your choice of cycling computer. For those of you who are in the target market you’d probably also like: ... Some real usefulness made of the SIM card eg call notifications, incident notification. ... Lower the price for this model. Don’t pretend to be a top-end product. The X5 is not quite there yet. Get cracking on an XPLOVA X5.5 … Like Garmin, the X5 also has a Live Track feature. Here someone sitting in front of a screen at home can check your progress. The great thing with what the XPLOVA does here is that NO PHONE IS REQUIRED – JUST THE X5 and a working SIM 3G CARD.
