Given the fast paced moving markets and the introduction of better and better budget options by the day, brands and consumers want timeless things, but not the eternal ones (giant pun intended). And 7hz just did it again with their Salnotes Zero (Zero). They aimed for the audiophile twitter trends: calling a set Zero and making it around 20 dollars. The original 7Hz Salnotes Zero arrived in 2022 to much fanfare and praise. Coming from their highly successful 7Hz Timeless Planar IEM, would 7Hz be able to enter the budget IEM market with a bang? Read on to find out. I purchased this set of IEMs with my own money and all opinions are my own. While there are many good sub-$20 IEMs in the market now, the 7Hz Salnotes Zero really paved the way for this budget IEM bracket. Obviously most people will compare the OG Zero to the newer Zero: 2 but I will instead compare it to the TangZu Wan’er SG since that’s what I have on my desk right now. The 7Hz Salnotes Zero come in a packaging that reminds that of KZ earphones – a cardboard box with a sleeve and a transparent plastic window showing the earphones. Considering the sub-$30 price, you could do a lot worse than what the 7HZ Salnotes Zero offer. That said, the treble section is very problematic as it has a couple of spikes which make it aggressive and fatiguing, which ultimately detracts from a positive listening experience. My unit also has build quality issues, which doesn’t help either. Everything considered, then, while the 7Hz Salnotes Zero has a lot of good things going for it, I think that there are better alternatives out there – just check the Best Of page to learn about some. The 7Hz Salnotes Zero are very affordable and try to bring something new to the sub-$50 space with a single, 10 mm dynamic driver housed in a plastic and metal shell.
