8 Things to Know Before Buying a Baofeng UV-5R in 2026
www.besthamradio.com
The Baofeng UV-5R is the radio responsible for a renaissance in the handheld radio market. No longer do you have to spend hundreds of dollars on a useful amateur radio. Is it worth the hype? Let me start by saying that no, the Baofeng UV-5R will not hold its own against high-end radios like the Kenwood TH-D74, Yaesu FT-60R, etc. It was never designed for that, so just get it out of your head. It is, however, a remarkable and completely usable amateur radio and has spawned more radio models than any other radio around, such as the Baofeng BF-F8HP (I have a review of that radio too!). In fact, for the price, I would go so far as to say the Baofeng UV-5R is an outstanding radio, and you get more for your money with this radio than you do with any of the high-end pricey radios (this coming from someone who owns pretty much all the pricey radios). Speaking of programming, it is true that the Baofeng UV-5R, like all analog Baofeng radios, has a unique menu system that is wildly different than what most people are used to with their Yaesu, Kenwood, Icom and other major radios. The menus also seem to confuse people who are new to amateur radio, which is to be expected since there are a ton of features.
Baofeng UV-5R Review (2026): Still the Best $20 Ham Radio? | ...
www.radioranked.com
Eight years after Baofeng first shipped it, the UV-5R is still the cheapest way to get a working dual-band handheld onto your hip, and it's still the radio most new Technicians end up holding within a month of their license arriving. But the market has changed. Sub-$35 alternatives from TIDRADIO and Retevis now compete on features Baofeng doesn't bother with. So the real question in 2026 isn't "is the UV-5R any good" (it is), it's "is it still the right radio for someone learning the hobby today?" The Baofeng UV-5R in 2026 is still the right radio for the situation it was always right for: you have a Technician license, you've never owned a handheld, and you want to be on the air this weekend without spending more than a tank of gas. There's a longer history here, including FCC enforcement actions starting in 2013 against importers marketing the radio as a GMRS unit. Stock UV-5Rs used legally by Technicians on ham bands have never been a target. The legal grey zone exists because the radio's wide TX range means it can transmit on frequencies the radio is not certified for. Don't do that. Read our full Is the Baofeng UV-5R Legal? Yes, for licensed amateur (ham) radio use on amateur bands. It is not Part 95 type-accepted, so it is not legal for GMRS or FRS even though it can physically transmit on those frequencies. The FCC has fined sellers for marketing it as a GMRS radio. For full context, see our Is the Baofeng UV-5R Legal?

The Baofeng UV-5R has been produced since 2012 and exported to markets worldwide. The controversial radio had no FCC Part 95 certification in the United States. As a result, it was not authorized for use in the GMRS and FRS, only for amateur radio. Baofeng launched a number of other models based on the UV-5R technology, since 2012. The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa issued a ban after finding the UV-5R to be causing radio frequency interference and for having continuous tuning capabilities, a feature that would require an operator obtain a Frequency allocation license before purchasing or using the device. The Baofeng UV-5R is a popular beginner amateur radio HT in the US. However, the FCC cited the Houston, Texas-based importer Amcrest Industries, which owns and operates Baofeng radio US for illegally marketing the UV-5R, "capable of operating outside the scope of its equipment authorization", the FCC Citation said, which is outside of its Part 90 authorization granted. The FCC asserted Amcrest marketed "UV-5R-series FM hand-held radios capable of transmitting on 'restricted frequencies'". Later revisions of the UV-5R sold in the US had transmission frequencies locked to the ham bands, however, there exists a key combination to unlock the ability to transmit on the full band. Both Russian and Ukrainian forces have used various Baofeng radios, including the Baofeng UV-5R, in the Russo-Ukrainian War and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

8 Things to Know Before Buying a Baofeng UV-5R Plus in 2026
www.besthamradio.com
This is actually a smart move for the Baofeng UV-5R plus even if this is an upgraded version of the old UV-5R as the market is ripe with accessories for these radios. I have lost count of the number of radios that have been released as “updated UV-5R!” or some such statement. Most of them are simply gimmicks to get your money, some, however, are actual improvements over the classic. Which one is the Baofeng UV-5R plus? Most of them are simply gimmicks to get your money, some, however, are actual improvements over the classic. Which one is the Baofeng UV-5R plus? Starting with the basics, the Baofeng UV-5R plus shares all the same accessories with the UV-5R including a drop-in charger, antenna, battery, microphone, speaker, headset, and pretty much anything else you could name. Turning on the Baofeng UV-5R plus has that same old familiar beeps and voice we are used to. Nothing exciting, and the menu structure is exactly the same. This too makes sense. Keep the things that make it a classic. The buttons are an interesting mix, as the PTT is noticeably better on the Baofeng UV-5R plus than the old UV-5R, but the VFO/MR and A/B buttons are much worse.
